Today sees the official opening of the UCI cinema, on the Grenfell Island site. The cinema was approved in November 1998. Soon after that work started, and now the 8-screen cinema is ready for opening. It will boast 1358 seats and 26 wheelchair spaces in its modern design. The owners hope to attract some 600,000 cinema fans a year.
Maidenhead's last cinema closed more than 20 years ago. Up until today the nearest cinemas have been at High Wycombe, Bracknell and Slough, all around 20 minutes drive away. It's hoped the new cinema and adjoining office block will bring the town a boost - and local bar and restaurant owners are hoping visitors will combine a film with a meal or some drinks in one of the plentiful restaurants.
The 3250 square metre cinema cost around £5 million to construct and is the group's 37th cinema. See the various stages from the Grenfell and cinema links on the news index page. The cinema also features a bar and snack area.
