A huge beaming smile greets us from the friendly front-of-house as we enter this smart looking restaurant at the eastern end of town. Big apologies that there were no tables, but would we like to take a drink at the bar whilst we waited? The bar area looks warm and welcoming with a stylish gas fire made from huge pebbles - so how could we refuse? "Of course we can put the drinks on your food bill sir." Certainly an excellent start.

Gazing around you can see that a large amount of money has been invested in the building after Antonio's (the previous restaurant here) closed in May 2000. Jonathans opened in June 2001, the improvements and extensions include smart polished wood flooring, low key lighting, a disabled toilet downstairs and some smart toilets upstairs with very unusual blue glass bowls as wash hand basins. There's seating for around 100, a minority of these are in an intimate section upstairs - arranged in an atrium style overlooking the entrance area.

Italian cuisine. Starters include garlic bread at 1.45 and bruschetta al funghi at 3.40. For main course try the spaghetti bolognaise at 6.25 or the 4-seasons pizza at 6.95. All well cooked and served by pleasant and plentiful waiting staff. Remarkably reasonable prices - to finish there's a lovely tiramisu at 3.50 and cappuccino at 1.50. Italian bottled beers on offer.

Tasteful surroundings, excellent waiting staff, reasonably priced food and an all-round good atmosphere earn Jonathans a recommendation - it's no wonder we had to wait for that table.
