JD Wetherspoon are investing heavily at the moment and have created 10,000 new jobs in their pubs, bars and lodges between 1998 and 2002. This pub (one of more than 500 bearing the Wetherspoon name) opened in May 2002 and is large and airy with a welcoming feel about it. To the left is the bar, in the centre the main eating/drinking area with tables and chairs, and also high tables for drinkers. To the right is a smaller eating area which is no-smoking and allows children. Purpose built for the chain, the pub's interior and exterior will win no awards. There are however some interesting displays on the walls of local landmarks and people (Lord Desborough being featured in one display). The pub scores many points in other areas. For example, the food choice is excellent, reasonably priced and varied including ham, egg and chips for £4.29 and chicken fillet burger and chips for £4.99. Kids can choose from 6 meals, some vegetarian options, at £2.49 including a drink, an ice cream and a drawing pack - crayons and paper (how do they manage to make a profit on this?!) The drinks are also reasonably priced, a guest beer on sale at just £1.55. Low prices are just one of the Wetherspoon trademarks. Another is the complete lack of background music, a blessing for those who like to eat and drink without being blasted with noise, and yet another their passion for real ale. The staff are friendly and attentive, the loos (downstairs) clean and well equipped. Other facilites include a disabled tiolet with baby change area. Children are allowed in the children's area until 6pm. This pub, on the corner of Queen Street and King Street (near the cinema) has a well deserved maidenhead.net recommendation and we look forward to its continued success. |
