Closed July 2003. Demolished later the same year. Review is left here for historical purposes. Used to be Pinkertons, an American-style wine bar. Re-opened on 5 November 1998 as the Newt And Cucumber. A Morland pub, food available. Part of a chain of around 11 establishments all with the same name in Birmingham, Cardiff, Slough, Reading and Coventry amongst other places. The bare wooden floor of Pinkertons has been replaced by a bright colourful carpet in the main bar. On the left is the dance area which has a wooden floor. A DJ plays modern tunes in the evening. The walls are painted in a very bright peach and there are some complicated arcade games. No real ales, all beers are pumped. Midnight bar extensions on Friday and Saturday. Dress code smart casual - clean jeans and trainers are apparently OK. Bouncers on the door. Jen writes on 23 July 2001: Now under new management and with a 'No ID/No Entrance' policy, aiming at the over 20's market. Student night on Wed, with cheap or 2 for 1 deals. Live Bands Every Thurs, and resident DJ on Wed/Fri/Sat night. Now open Sunday. Eto Demerzel writes on 8 January 2003: Seems to be re-inventing itself slightly by having live bands in at the weekend, appealling to the 18-25 metal fans. Paulus writes on 11 January 2003: The newt and cucumber now has live bands thurs , fri and sat and operates a no Gary Lager policy |
