This pub closed for refurbishment in December 2000. It re-opened shortly afterwards after an extension and major refit; it looks much smarter and more modern now with "Friends" style sofas at the front. However the clientele didn't change much - this place is still busy and attracts a young lively student-looking crowd. There are now 2 outside areas - a smart courtyard towards the front and a garden at the back - the only pub in Maidenhead town centre with a garden area. Sea green, burnt orange, bright blue and dark yellow paint adorns the walls as well as large modern art canvases (the overall effect isn't as bad as it sounds). Large screen TV showing major sports events only. Tennis arcade game. Guest beers. And loud music. "It's alright if you're 18" commented one reviewer. One of 28 pubs owned by Hobgoblinns, a sister company of the Wychwood Brewery. This pub was originally called The Red Lion Inn and has had many name changes since. Hanski Radley writes on 7 March 2002: I myself, am 23, and love the Hobgoblin and go there frequently with friends of a similar age. I just wanted to say that I think the popularity of this pub has been underestimated. |
