A cosy bar area greets you as you as you enter this restaurant, the only one in the village of Burchetts Green, just outside Maidenhead. The restaurant (which is non-smoking) is attractive from the outside and has a car park at the rear. It has been attractively redecorated with cream walls, some secluded tables and dog and horse pictures on the walls. The look is finished well with luxurious table cloths, candles and fresh flowers on the tables. An intimate setting, there is around 12 tables and no games machines or pool in the bar area.

The best feature about this restaurant is undoubtedly its food. Starters include toasted Irish soda bread with smoked salmon and scrambled egg (£7.95) which was delicious and came with a crisp and fresh salad and dressing. There's also mozzarella tomato, basil, red onion and a Balsamic vinaigrette (£5.95) which was "The best mozzarella I have ever tasted, mainly because of the fragrant dressing" according to our reviewer. Main courses include fillet of pork stroganoff with rice (£12.95) - succulent meat, well cooked with a creamy sauce and fluffy rice - and a very tasty half a roast Gressingham duck with a brandy and black cherry sauce served with gratin dauphinoise potatoes (£15.95). Sweets include flambe bananas with rum and dark brown sugar served with cream, sticky toffee pudding with custard, cream or ice cream and Belgian waffles with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream. All sweets priced at £4.95.

All the food served is beautifully presented and comes in very generous portions. Unusually there are a number of different teas and coffees available including Earl Grey and Peppermint tea. Green King IPA beer is available from the bar and French bread and butter is served at the table. The restaurant was busy on the Saturday night we visited and the service was not as quick as might be expected normally. But this did not detract from a beautiful meal served in very pleasant surroundings. Recommended. Review above relates to visit in November 2002.

Oh dear, looks like this restaurant is now not so good - Brenda King writes on 1 April 2004:

A Visit on Sat 27th March to The Crown Burchetts Green to celebrate a birthday was not a happy one! On the net its advertised that the best feature is 'the food'. NONE of that food was available and there were no generous portions. It cost a fortune and the Management had a couldn't care less attidude. Hopefully somebody will visit this pub soon and knock its rating DOWN. We learnt later on that it was under new Management.

Val Brown comments on 23 July 2004:

I was very surprised to read the comments on your site. We are regular customers to the Crown and have a wonderful meal every time. The food is freshly prepared and the new owners have made us feel very welcome. The service to great and you never feel rushed. There is a great choice of wine at reasonable prices. I would definately recommend The crown.
